Old Fig Garden Fresno CA [Community TOUR]

Have you ever wondered if there is a place in Fresno where all different types of architecture—big and small, old and newer—can co-exist in perfect harmony? In this episode of Fresno Redefined, we’re going to take a tour of Fig Garden to explore its historic charm. We’ll learn about it’s history and show you some of the beautiful home styles you can find in this neighborhood.

The History Of Fig Garden

Are you tired of the same old cookie-cutter neighborhoods? Fig Garden is the place for you, a wonderful neighborhood rich in history in the heart of Fresno, California.

In 1894, Henry Markarian dried figs. After purchasing a ranch north of Fresno where he planted them, Markarian's fig gardens were flourishing by 1910. Markarian partnered with J.C. Forkner, a local real estate developer, and at one point their fig growing business encompassed 12,000 acres. By 1919, Forkner, along with local businessman Wylie Giffen, subdivided the section of land near Fresno into smaller plots. The area once named J.C. Forkner Fig Gardens was renamed Old Fig.

It’s in Old Fig that the original Fig Garden project by Forkner expanded to include acreage that eventually merged into other sections of Fresno. The original location of this 160-acre ranch owned by Henry Markarian is now the site of Manchester Mall.

Beautiful Homes And Great Amenities

Fig Garden features homes ranging in styles from American Craftsman-style bungalows and Victorians to lovely Mid-century modern properties. Sizes range from 700 square feet up to 4,000 and 5,000 square feet with estate-sized lots. The price point can range anywhere from $250,000 up to the millions.

This area is prized for its mature landscaping and other great community events, such as Christmas Tree Lane. There’s also the Fig Garden Swim and Racquet Club nearby, as well as great shopping like Fig Garden Village.

Fig Garden Village, one of my favorite destinations in this area, has tons to do. There are many great boutiques, restaurants, and other services. One of my favorite restaurants, The Elbow Room, has upscale dining and an incredible outdoor patio bar. Other great restaurants include J. Jill and, of course, Deli Delicious known for their incredible sandwiches. The shopping is not to be missed. I'll never forget my parents bringing me up here when I was a little girl, traveling from Bakersfield to get our fall coats.
